Written Exam Death and Dying

Q In a minimum of 1,000 words, (approximately four pages, double-spaced) write a paper about the changes and processes that take place as a person as dying. You will also investigate the social and emotional factors of the death process. Please double space your work. 1. Using outside research (including options such as: books, journal articles, interviews with medical professionals, the Internet, etc.), gather information about the physical changes that occur in the human body during the process of dying of a terminal illness or injury. Begin by researching the concept of terminal drop or terminal decline. Continue the research into physical changes up to the moment of death. In your paper, detail what happens as a person dies from a physical and cognitive perspective. What are some of the symptoms of terminal decline that happen? What is the process of death that a person goes through? Include a detailed description of the physical and cognitive changes that happen. Then, consider what can be done to make a dying person feel supported and comfortable during this process. Be sure to properly cite all outside sources. 2. Using outside research (including options such as: books, journal articles, interviews with medical professionals, the Internet, etc.), gather information about the psychosocial dimension of death, including social and emotional effects that the dying process can have on loved ones by looking at various cultural perspectives on death. In your paper, highlight at least two different cultures, and engage in an in-depth discussion of what grieving or mourning practices they have, what burial rituals or rites are practiced, how these particular cultures view death and dying, as well as any other important information you would like to include. 3. In the final part of your paper, reflect on the process of writing a paper on death. What questions or emotions did engaging in this work bring up for you? What meaning does death have to you personally at this point in your life? What are some of the forces (your family, your culture, your religious beliefs, etc.) that shape how you view death? How do you think about your own life differently after reading this chapter? Consider looking at the “Personal Wishes Statement” as you contemplate your responses: https://www.mass.gov/info-details/massachusetts-legal-forms-for-subjects-e-h#health-care-proxy-/-living-will-

Ageing is a normal phase that all human beings go through in their lives before they die. Kübler and Ross (1975) defined death as “the final stage of growth in this life. There is no total death. Only the body dies. The self or spirit, or whatever you may be wish to label it, is eternal”. The terms terminal decline and terminal drop refer to “the phenomenon of increased cognitive decline in proximity to death” (Stuart et al., 2011).
